With a reduction<\/b> in direct CO\u2082 emissions<\/b> from electricity generation<\/b> by 58% in 2025, compared to 2019, and total investments<\/b> of over \u20ac24 billion. <\/b>by 2030 in renewable energy projects,<\/b>energy storage and new energy infrastructure, DES <\/b>continues to reduce its environmental footprint<\/b>and accelerate the transformation<\/b> of its energy portfolio.<\/p>\n
This year’s World Environment Day<\/a> <\/b>is dedicated to action on climate<\/b>, highlighting the need to accelerate initiatives that help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen resilience to the impacts of climate change.<\/b><\/p>\n
At the same time, PPC’s de-globalisation<\/b> strategy is already delivering measurable results. In 2025, direct CO\u2082 emissions from lignite-fired power plants were reduced by 77% compared to 2019, while lignite generation was reduced to 2.7 TWh, corresponding to 13% of PPC’s total production. At the same time, installed renewable energy capacity<\/b> rose to 7.2 GW from 3.3 GW in 2019.<\/p>\n
In addition, the validation of the PPC Group’s emission reduction targets<\/b> by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) confirms their alignment with the most recognised international scientific standards for addressing climate change. In this context, the Group aims to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions per MWh produced by 73.7% by 2030, compared to the 2021 baseline year.<\/p>\n
An important pillar of the Group’s energy transition<\/b> is the development of large-scale renewable energy projects. A typical example is the cluster of photovoltaic plants in Ptolemaida and Amyndeon, the largest group of photovoltaic projects in Europe. The photovoltaic plants with a total installed capacity of 2,130 MW utilise land from former lignite mines and are estimated to prevent the emission of more than 1.5 million tonnes of CO\u2082 per year.<\/p>\n
At the same time, the DEP<\/b> Group is investing in all forms of renewable and flexible generation, as well as in modern energy storage technologies with batteries and pumped storage, enhancing the stability and flexibility of the energy system. In addition, it completed the first wind farm repowering project in Greece, replacing 105 old wind turbines on 10 islands with 24 new, higher-efficiency ones.<\/p>\n
The progress made by PPC in environmental management<\/b> is also recognised by international organisations. In 2025, PPC maintained a “B” rating in the CDP Climate Change Index, one of the most important international indicators for assessing environmental performance.<\/p>\n
In parallel, PPC is developing initiatives for the protection of the natural environment<\/b> in the areas where it operates, implementing actions to protect biodiversity, restore nature and reduce pollution, in cooperation with specialised organisations and civil society bodies. Through targeted local-scale initiatives, such as coastal and marine ecosystem clean-ups, environmental education and awareness programmes for students and actions to enhance the resilience of ecosystems, it actively contributes to the protection of the natural environment.<\/p>\n
Looking ahead, the PPC Group’s new strategic plan for the 2026-2030 <\/b>period foresees total investments of more than \u20ac24 billion, one of the largest energy investment programmes in Europe. The Group intends to double its installed capacity to 24.3 GW by 2030, investing in renewable energy, energy storage and flexible generation in Greece and the wider Central and South-Eastern European region.<\/p>\n
