With the completion of the screening of the entire documentary by Eleni Varvitsioti and Viktoria Dendrinou on SKY, the reason why the documentary was titled “In the Millionth” becomes clear.<\/p>\n
Because it is exactly the limit at which the country found itself and it shows exactly what we escaped from. <\/p>\n
Another title could have been “We were holy”, because those of us who lived through that period, and what followed after the… kolotoumpa, either confirmed what we knew or filled the gaps that existed. Younger people may have found out what happened and how the country almost went off the cliff.<\/p>\n
We also remembered how we arrived at a third – for most people unnecessary – amnesty, at an additional cost of \u20ac100 billion as a result of the “proud negotiation” that followed the “creative ambiguity” and the pledging of public assets for 99 years as collateral for lenders.<\/p>\n
As we recall the misleading and stake-free referendum, the closed banks, the capital controls, the queues at ATMs and the fainting pensioners. <\/p>\n
These images, which no one wants repeated even as a joke, show what can happen if the voices of outrage prevail and how easy promises turn into… illusions with the victims being all those who believe there are magic wands that can tear up memoranda with a law and an article.<\/p>\n
They also show the reasons why a coherent and costed policy is needed to revive the economy in order to enable growth and the return of the dividend to the citizens. Increasing investment, creating new jobs, better paid jobs and lower taxes cannot be achieved with wishful thinking and false promises.<\/p>\n
The voices that are coming back to remind everyone who appeared in the past to claim that “it’s no big deal if we get out of euro” are hitting the soft underbelly of… dignity, in whose name they (also) currently chant.<\/p>\n
Let’s just think about what would have happened during the pandemic or whether the country’s defence armour as it has been shaped over the last seven years or even diplomatic armour combined with the country’s emergence as a geostrategic, political and energy pillar in the wider region would have been feasible.<\/p>\n
No, not everything has been done perfectly. Yes, mistakes have been made and there have been omissions. The fact that this is acknowledged is an important parameter that leads to the search for solutions and corrective interventions, unlike all those who claim to be infallible and avoid self-criticism.<\/p>\n
