{"id":9950,"date":"2026-06-10T13:46:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-10T10:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.tomanifesto.gr\/?p=9950"},"modified":"2026-06-10T13:46:00","modified_gmt":"2026-06-10T10:46:00","slug":"ministry-of-health-palliative-care-network-of-500-beds-throughout-greece","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/en.tomanifesto.gr\/?p=9950","title":{"rendered":"Ministry of Health: palliative care network of 500 beds throughout Greece"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A<\/b> palliative care<\/b> is entering a new era in <b>Greece<\/b>, following the establishment of a legal framework in 2022 and the implementation of actions by the <b>Ministry of Health<\/b>. <\/p>\n<p>The aim is to provide universal access and <b>upgrade<\/b> the <b>quality<\/b> of life of <b>patients <\/b>suffering from <b>serious and chronic or life-threatening<\/a> diseases<\/b>, as announced during a press conference by the Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiades<\/b> and the Deputy Minister, Marios Themistokleoys.<\/p>\n<p>The Health Minister noted that it is <b>a matter of dignity<\/b>, adding that today there are <b>few structures<\/b>, resulting in patients remaining in <b>hospitals<\/b> for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Greece needs <b>500 palliative care beds<\/b> and their development will gradually begin. The creation of palliative care units includes the development of four beds at the <b>Pediatric Hospital of Thessaloniki &#8220;Stavros, Niarchos&#8221;<\/b>, the completion of the construction of which is estimated in January 2027. Also, 40 beds will be developed at the Theagenio Oncology Hospital in Thessaloniki<\/b>s and the first Public Palliative Care Unit in Attica,&#8221; Georgiades said, adding that announcements are expected in the next period.<\/p>\n<p>For his part, Mr. <b>Themistokleous<\/b> pointed out &#8220;that the National Action Plan includes<b> eight axes and the roadmap<\/b> involves beds within hospitals, creation of palliative care units and home services. The National Action Plan is the first attempt in the history of the country&#8217;s health system to have a national strategy for palliative care with a<b> horizon of 2030.&#8221;<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Action Plan aims to develop a<b>integrated system<\/b> of support for people and their families from the time of diagnosis of a serious chronic, progressive and life-threatening disease <b>through death and bereavement. <\/b>The development of units is expected to make a substantial contribution to <b>the dignified living<\/b> of patients, ensuring that no one is deprived of the necessary support at <b>the most difficult times of their lives. Palliative care is not only about end of life.
