In the presence of Konstantinos Tasoulas <\/strong>the events<\/b> of the Municipality of Distomo-Arachova-Antikyra for the 82nd anniversary of the Memorial of the Slaughter of Distomo<\/strong> by the German<\/b> occupation troops.<\/p>\n

The President of the Republic<\/b> said that “our duty towards this supreme sacrifice is memory and responsibility<\/b>” and added that “time does not write off the crime and history does not forget<\/b>“, while noting that “we the survivors must remember so that such crimes<\/b> are not repeated”.<\/p>\n

Also, that “reparations for these barbaric crimes are always, on behalf of the Greek State, alive and strong<\/b>” and asserted that we must “never again allow such inhuman theories and such inhuman regimes to prevail in the world”.<\/p>\n

In particular, Mr. Tasoulas<\/b>, after the celebration of the Archpriest’s memorial service at the Holy Church of St. Nicholas and the laying of a wreath at the victims’ Mausoleum, made the following statement<\/b>. Exactly 82 years ago today, on June 10, 1944, the German occupation army committed one of the biggest and most atrocious war crimes against civilians here in Distomo, in this town.<\/p>\n

Heard at the Invocation of the Dead a short while ago, here where we laid a wreath at the memorial, the name of a child four months old, children two years old, three years old, five months old. A grave crime was committed against the civilian population of Distomo by the Nazi troops on the altar of collective responsibility, an abhorrent theory that the National Socialist regime in Germany had embraced.<\/p>\n

Our duty to this supreme sacrifice is to remember and to take responsibility. Memory first because time does not write off the crime and history does not forget. Time does not amnesty. And we, the survivors, must remember: The responsibility is even greater, so that such crimes are not repeated and so that we can honour the memory of these people who were literally martyred, bearing in mind that reparations for these barbaric crimes are always, on behalf of the Greek State, alive and strong. And the Greek state maintains these claims for reparations in full.<\/p>\n

Today, therefore, we commemorate the memory and assume a responsibility: not to forget and never again allow such inhuman theories and such inhuman regimes to prevail in the world.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
