The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is proceeding with the installation of 106 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and an equal number of pharmacy kits at its facilities at Attica and Euboea.
This substantially enhances the level of safety and immediate response to emergencies within the university community.
The equipment is donated by the President and Managing Director of the Tsetis Pharmaceutical Group – UNI-PHARMA & InterMed, MSc Pharmacist and Honorary Doctor of the Department of Pharmacy of the University of Athens, Ioulia Tsetis, in memory of the Professor of Pharmacology of the Department of Pharmacy of the University of Athens Ioanna Andreadou.
As rector Gerasimos Siasos stresses, the protection of human life and the creation of a safe university environment are top priorities for the University of Athens. The donation, made in memory of Ioanna Andreadou, transforms the loss of a distinguished scientist into a lasting act of giving to the entire university community and society.
This major initiative is being implemented as part of the University’s strategy to protect the health of students, faculty, staff and visitors.
“This initiative is directly linked to a strategic choice of our University’s administration: The creation of a safe, humane and modern academic environment where prevention, preparedness and care for fellow human beings are a daily priority.Sudden cardiac death is one of the greatest challenges for modern health systems and it is well known that the first few minutes are crucial to saving a human life. For this reason, the installation of defibrillators will be accompanied by training programmes for students and staff in Basic Life Support and defibrillator use, in order to create an organised network of immediate response in our University premises.”
The defibrillators were placed in selected locations after mapping the university facilities by specialized scientists of the University of Athens.
