The response from Deputy Minister of Finance Nikos Papathanasis confirms that the necessary institutional procedures for the program’s activation have been completed, paving the way for the funding of hundreds of young scientists who seek to complete a doctoral dissertation at Greek universities. The Secretary-General of the New Democracy Parliamentary Group emphasizes that strengthening research, knowledge, and the scientific potential of the country is a critical pillar for the competitiveness of the economy, the generation of innovation and the creation of strong growth prospects, particularly at a time when young researchers are called upon to face increased economic and professional challenges.
“Supporting research and young scientists is a strategic investment in development, innovation, and the future of our country,”, emphasized the general secretary of the New Democracy Parliamentary Group, Member of Parliament for Larissa, Maximos Harakopoulos, in response to the remarks by Deputy Minister of Finance, Nikos Papathanasis, regarding the progress of the implementation of the doctoral scholarship program under the NSRF 2021-2027.

In his response, the minister in charge states that “the institutional framework of the program has been finalized” and announces that “following decisions by the Board of Directors of the State Scholarships Foundation (IKY), 310 scholarships will be awarded for the completion of doctoral dissertations, with a total budget of 13.392 million euros.” As noted in the response, “the signing of the revised Joint Ministerial Decision is pending, in order for the relevant announcement to be issued by IKY.”
It should be noted that Dr. Charakopoulos had highlighted in his parliamentary speech the delay in the implementation of Sub-project 2 “Scholarship Program for the Preparation of a Doctoral Dissertation,” highlighting the need for its timely promotion in order to support young researchers who are called upon to continue their work under significant financial pressure.
Finally, she noted that supporting doctoral candidates constitutes a substantial investment in the country’s human capital and a prerequisite for strengthening research, innovation, and Greece’s development prospects.
