Clear message to Turkey in view of the annual report of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
On the occasion of the vote on the text of the European Parliament’s annual report on Turkey, which is scheduled to take place next week during the European Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg, the head of the New Democracy Eurogroup, Eliza Vozemberg, issued the following statement:
“The Greek MEPs of New Democracy have once again confirmed their leading role in defending national interests and in highlighting the challenges that Turkey continues to pose to Greece and Cyprus.
Through coordinated interventions, the New Democracy Eurogroup played a decisive role in drafting a strong text on Turkey, which clearly reflects European concerns regarding Ankara’s revisionist policy, the deterioration of the human rights situation, and the systematic violations of international law.
The report unequivocally condemns the ongoing violations of Greek sovereignty and our country’s sovereign rights, as well as the illegal activities within the Greek Exclusive Economic Zone. At the same time, it rejects the revisionist doctrine of the “Blue Homeland”, calls on Turkey to fully respect the International Law of the Sea, and emphasizes that Turkey’s aggressive stance is a destabilizing factor in the region.
Another significant success for the New Democracy delegation is the inclusion of amendments that explicitly enshrine Greece’s legal right to extend its territorial waters to 12 nautical miles, in accordance with international law. Furthermore, Turkey’s recent attempt to institutionalize its illegal claims in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean through special legislation was highlighted, attempting to lend legitimacy to the “Blue Homeland” doctrine.
The New Democracy Eurogroup remains steadfastly committed to defending national interests, utilizing every institutional and political means at the European level, so that Greece’s voice is strong, credible, and effective.”
