The municipal authority Douka and the administration of Athens 9.84 seem to have discovered an original economic and journalistic theory.
On the one hand, the Municipality of Athens constantly cites financial constraints, proceeds to take out loans of tens of millions of euros and warns of difficult fiscal conditions. On the other hand, however, when it comes to specific personnel decisions, the coffers seem to suddenly… overflow. And we emphasize this because in recent years the municipal station has proceeded with several hires of journalists, either through contracts or project assignments.
It should be noted that 39 project-based contractors at the station continue to be paid amounts that barely cover basic living expenses.
According to reports, the station is preparing to onboard (shortly) two new journalists (ed. note: these are Eleni Stergiou, who works for Vangelis Marinakis’ media outlets, and Savvas Goulopoulos, who comes from the press office of PASOK) who will host just one show per week, every Friday, replacing Michalis Leani.
S. Goulopoulos claims that he will begin hosting a show alongside his colleague Eleni Stergiou , but they will do so on a pro bono basis.
To the question, finally, why cut an hour from M. Leani’s show to give it to two journalists (without pay, as they claim), the answer can only be provided by the station’s management.
We maintain, however, that they will not be paid, as claimed by both the two journalists and the station, because it would be provocative for 9.84 to proceed with new hires at a time when the municipality is heavily in debt and the station’s contract workers are underpaid.
