In the tragic incident involving the death of the 55-year-old nurse at the Nafplio Hospital, Health Minister, Adonis Georgiadis.
Mr. Georgiadis quoted a statement by the president of the hospital’s Employees’ Association, Vasilis Bavellas.
According to Mr. Bavelas, the incident involving the nurse’s cardiac arrest is not connected to the Roma and their relatives who were at the hospital at that time.
“The incident involving the death of our nurse and the Roma and their relatives who were causing a commotion are not related, as was reported yesterday. They were not aggressive, but they were shouting and crying because they had an 8-year-old child who was unconscious with them and they thought he had died. But he had not died,” he noted.
The union president also noted that “it is a fact that an emergency can put a nurse under pressure,” adding, however, that “the truth is that our nurse shouldn’t have been in the ER at that time because we weren’t on call yesterday.”
In reposting the statement, the Minister of Health noted that he investigated the case and concluded that the child’s relatives should not be held responsible.
“I investigated the incident, and the Roma who were there, anxious for their child, should not be blamed. This is not a case of violence against our employees. Incidents of this nature have occurred, but not yesterday,” wrote Mr. Georgiadis.
The minister concluded his post by expressing his condolences to the nurse’s family.
Georgiadis’s post in full:
“I am reproducing the statement by the President of the Nafplio Hospital Employees’ Association, Mr. Vasilis Bavelas regarding yesterday’s tragic incident involving the death of a nurse at the hospital from cardiac arrest:
“The incident involving the death of our nurse and the Roma and their relatives who were causing a commotion are not related, as was reported yesterday. They were not aggressive, but they were shouting and crying because they had an 8-year-old child who was unconscious with them and they thought he had died. But he had not died. It is true that an emergency can put a nurse under pressure. But the truth is that our nurse wasn’t supposed to be in the ER at that time because we weren’t on call yesterday.”
I investigated the incident, and it should not be blamed on the Roma who were there, anxious for their child. This was not an incident of violence against our staff; incidents of this nature have occurred, but not yesterday.
My condolences to her family.”
