The leaders of the G7 (the U.S., Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, and Canada) have agreed to impose tougher sanctions on Russia due to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
This is confirmed by the final communiqué of the Evian summit in France.
The text also promises an increase in deliveries of long-range weapons and air defense “capabilities” to the Ukrainian military. The text refers to “new momentum” and “Ukrainian progress” on the battlefields “in recent months.”
According to the statement, the leaders believe that this is the “right moment” to take additional measures against Moscow, following U.S.-Iran agreement that provides for the opening of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
In addition to providing support in the form of weapons and ammunition to the Ukrainian military, the G7 also pledged energy assistance to Ukraine, so that the country can cope “next winter,” even though the Russian military is targeting power plants and the distribution network.
French President Emmanuel Macron, the host of the summit, described it as a “moment of strategic awakening” and, in a video he posted on Instagram, spoke of “victories” in terms of support for Ukraine. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz spoke of a “day of hope” and “a chance for peace,” citing a statement by U.S. President Donald Trump, who said it is time for Russia to “reach an agreement” with Ukraine to end the conflict.
