The strategic importance of regional cooperation for the development of transportation and infrastructure was highlighted by the Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation, Christos Dimas, during his speech at the Transport Investment Summit in Thessaloniki.
Speaking during the session “The Next Wave of Connectivity: Emerging Investment Opportunities Across the Regions,” Mr. Dimas pointed out that the real investment opportunity of the next decade lies in a broader geographic area encompassing the Western Balkans, the Eastern Mediterranean, and countries neighboring the European Union.
He emphasized that the region has historically faced instability and challenges, but today there is an opportunity to make a strategic choice toward cooperation, which can yield shared economic and social benefits.
He focused his remarks on the development of major cross-border transport corridors, such as the Western Balkans – Eastern Mediterranean and the Baltic – Black Sea – Aegean Corridor, which can enhance interconnectivity and the flow of goods and investments.
The minister noted that strengthening cooperation requires not only infrastructure, but also financial instruments, human resources, improved procedures, and effective coordination among countries. In closing, he emphasized that success depends on the ability of states to coordinate effectively, noting that “cooperation is the key to sustainable development and investment stability in the region.”
