The 140 projects that are funded for Aetolia-Acarnania by the Ministry of the Interior and the Recovery and Resilience Fund was mentioned by Deputy Minister of the Interior Vasilis Spanakis.

Mr. Spanakis, during his visit with a government delegation to the prefecture, held a series of meetings with institutional bodies and citizens.

During a visit to the Technical Chamber of Aetolia-Acarnania, the Deputy Minister emphasized that of all the projects, 59 have already been completed, while 71 are currently under construction, with a total budget exceeding 95 million euros. These projects concern critical infrastructure for the region, such as road safety, rural road construction, as well as improvements to water supply and sewer systems.

At the same time, Mr. Spanakis referred to the increase in government funding for local government in recent years and emphasized that: “From 2019 to the present, we have seen a 48% increase in regular funding for the municipalities of Aetolia-Acarnania. There are growing needs and new challenges, such as the climate crisis. For example, for the 2026 fire prevention measures, the municipalities of the Aetolia-Acarnania prefecture have received more than 1.2 million euros to implement the necessary preventive measures during the fire season, such as clearing land and so on.”

He then noted that the relevant committee of the Hellenic Parliament is currently debating the new Local Government Code, a Code that constitutes a genuine reform, which reduces bureaucracy, clarifies roles, powers, and responsibilities between primary and secondary local government. The new Code introduces positive provisions, such as the abolition of the Real Property Tax on building rights, while taking into account the age of properties in the calculation of the Development Fee, thereby strengthening local government in practice.

Finally, Mr. Spanakis emphasized that: “The New Democracy government is here to address existing needs, as well as the contemporary needs that arise. We are engaged in an open dialogue and are prepared for the upcoming national elections. We want to highlight the government’s work; we are talking with institutional bodies to identify issues and address the everyday concerns of citizens that we must resolve.”
