The effort to achieve greater transparency in prices of everyday consumer products is now also taking place in the digital environment.

The PosoKanei brings together data from major supermarket chains on a single platform,, allowing consumers to immediately see where it’s most cost-effective to do their shopping.

The public response was immediate; within the first few weeks of operation, more than 175,000 users searched for information on prices and products.

What is PosoKanei and how does it work

The PosoKanei is a digital tool for searching and comparing prices of consumer goods. Through the platform, citizens can compare prices by retail chain, track price changes, and plan their shopping.

This service is available free of charge via the website posokanei.gov.gr, as well as through apps for Android and iOS devices.

It is important to note that this is not an online store, and purchases are not made through the app, as its role is purely informational.

Thousands of products in a single database

Today, the platform includes approximately 10,000 product codes, including both brand-name and private-label items.

The available categories are:

  • Food
  • Beverages
  • Personal Care Products
  • Cleaning products
  • Baby products
  • Pet products

The largest category is food, with more than 4,800 SKUs, while the products are divided into a total of 36 subcategories.

Searches can be performed either by product name or via barcode. In mobile apps, users can scan the barcode directly.

Participating chains

The system retrieves data from the chains:

  • Galaxias
  • Sklavenitis
  • Chalkiadakis
  • SYNKA
  • Masoutis
  • My Market
  • AB Vasilopoulos
  • Kritikos
  • Market In
  • Lidl

Prices are updated daily either through direct data feeds from the companies themselves or through automated data collection from their online stores.

The “digital shopping cart” that calculates the final cost

One of the platform’s most useful features is the ability to create personal shopping lists.

Each user can create up to five different lists, adding up to 50 products to each and specifying specific quantities.

The system automatically calculates the total cost of the shopping cart per chain, allowing for a real comparison before visiting the store.

The “Find Me a Cheaper Price” feature

PosoKanei also features the “Find Me Cheaper”, which suggests more affordable alternatives within the same product category.

This way, consumers can explore different solutions and reduce the total cost of their purchases without a time-consuming search.

Price tracking and international comparisons

The platform also provides access to two-month price history, allowing users to determine whether an offer is truly a good deal or if a product’s price is within the usual range.

At the same time, where data is available, prices from European markets are also displayed, such as:

  • Italy
  • France
  • Belgium
  • Romania
  • Bulgaria
  • Cyprus
  • Spain

While this feature does not allow for absolute comparisons—since each country has a different tax and commercial framework—it does provide a more comprehensive picture of the market.

The Minister of Digital Governance and Artificial Intelligence, Dimitris Papastergiou, notes: “PosoKanei is a prime example of how technology provides real solutions to real problems. And accuracy is one of the most important aspects”.

According to him, the platform is based on modern cloud infrastructure and is constantly being updated, and was developed by a Greek startup based in Ptolemaida. Next steps include adding new products, more data sources, and expanding the tool’s philosophy to include the energy market.
