On the issue of increasing taxation of luxury lifestyles, the new party of Alexis Tsipras, through statements made by its officials.
Speaking yesterday on the Mega Weekend show, ELAS official Haris Athanasiadis was asked about the issue of taxation and replied that his party’s goal is to tax ultra-luxurious lifestyles; in fact, according to his calculations, this tax would generate 600 million euros annually for the state.
Today, speaking on Faye Mavragani’s show on SKAI, Marizeta Antonopoulou, a member of the Greek Left Coalition, spoke about taxing “consumer spending associated with a super-luxurious lifestyle” and, when asked to explain what she meant, she replied:
“Our fellow citizens who live in ultra-luxurious apartments, in a new hotel in Athens…. Shouldn’t these people be taxed more?” she asked.
And she continued with her own definition of the ultra-wealthy: “We understand that a swimming pool is a sign of extreme wealth; yachts that go very fast are a sign of extreme wealth.”
She also reiterated the proposal for an increase in the tax on dividends from 5% to 15%, but gradually rather than “all at once.”
