The Prime Minister of Britain, Keir Starmer, announced his resignation from the leadership of the Labour Party on Monday morning at the entrance to Downing Street.
As he stated, he has informed King Charles of his decision.
The party’s new leader is expected to be appointed before September, when Parliament resumes its work after the summer, thus paving the way for the country to have its seventh prime minister in 10 years.
Less than two years after Labor’s landslide victory in the July 2024 general election, Starmer stated that it is clear the party wants him to step down.
“The question my party is now asking is whether I am in the best position to lead us into the next election. I have heard my party’s answer to that question, and I accept it in good faith,” he said, emphasizing that all the decisions he has made were aimed at “putting the country I love first.” “I will step down as leader of the Labour Party,” Starmer said.
He clarified that nominations for his successor as Labour leader will open on July 9, and the process will be completed by the summer recess. This means that the party’s new leader will be chosen before September.
Until then, he will remain prime minister.
