The upgrade project aims to transform Serres into a leading motorsports destination in Southeastern Europe.
The government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis is moving forward with the upgrade of the Serres Motorway with funding of 9 million euros from the Ministry of Sports’ Public Investment Program, during a period of intense competition in motorsports in Southeast Europe. The project is one of the most significant interventions in the sports infrastructure of Greek motorsport and aims to modernize the track, which for more than 25 years has been the country’s premier racing facility. It includes extensive improvements to the race course, safety zones, pits, and hospitality facilities, aimed at complying with international FIA and FIM standards and enabling the hosting of major events. At the same time, the development strategy for motorsports is being strengthened, as is Greece’s position in the face of new investments in racetracks in neighboring countries such as Bulgaria and Romania.
The creation of the new, state-of-the-art A1 Motor Park racetrack in Bulgaria caused a sensation throughout Southeast Europe. With modern facilities, international certifications, and ambitions to attract major auto and motorcycle events, the neighboring country has clearly shown that it wishes to take a leading role on the motorsports map.
The Greek response was not long in coming
Specifically, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis revealed to newsauto the government’s decision to proceed with the comprehensive upgrade of the Serres Motorway, with 9 million euros in funding from the Ministry of Sports’ Public Investment Program.
This is one of the most significant projects ever undertaken in the sports infrastructure of Greek motorsports and a project that aims to restore Serres to the top of the Balkans.
For more than 25 years, the Serres Circuit has been the country’s premier racing facility. The track has hosted national and international races, car tests, training programs, and thousands of motorsport enthusiasts from Greece and abroad.
However, international competition has increased significantly in recent years. New tracks in Bulgaria, Romania, and other countries in the region are vying for events and investments, leveraging modern infrastructure and high-level certifications.
This is precisely why the upgrade of the Serres circuit is of strategic importance.
The project includes extensive improvements to the race course, safety zones, facilities for teams and drivers, the pits, the administrative buildings, and the hospitality facilities. The goal is for the track to achieve full compliance with current FIA and FIM standards, paving the way for it to host major international events.
The upgrade isn’t just about racing
Serres’ new era is linked to the growth of motorsports tourism, a sector that generates hundreds of millions of euros each year in European regions with modern racing facilities. Drivers, teams, tire companies, automakers, driving schools, and event organizers are constantly seeking modern tracks for testing and training.
Serres is ideally located. Within a few hours, millions of residents from Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, North Macedonia, and Turkey can reach the track. This gives the region a significant competitive advantage over other facilities in Southeast Europe.
At the same time, the upgraded track has the potential to become a center for driver training and road safety. At a time when Greece is placing particular emphasis on reducing traffic accidents, the existence of a facility meeting international standards can support driver training programs, initiatives for young people, testing of new technologies, and corporate training programs.
The government’s decision also sends a strong message to the international motorsport community. Greece is not merely observing developments in the Balkans. It is investing to be at the forefront of those developments.
With a budget of 9 million euros, international standards, and long-term planning, the Serres Motor Racing Circuit is poised to once again become the region’s premier track and one of the most important motorsports destinations in Southeastern Europe
