Green light for digital upgrade of trains with an emphasis on strengthening of safety and the acceleration of modernization projects for the railway network.

George Kotsiras, Deputy Minister of Transportation, conducted an site visit to the headquarters of Hellenic Railways and the Athens Traffic Control Center at SKA, where he was thoroughly briefed on the progress of critical projects for digital transformation, the implementation of remote management systems, and the strengthening of operational security of the network, at a time when the ministry is placing particular emphasis on upgrading the railway infrastructure, improving the maintenance and operation of the network, as well as integrating technologies such as the railway.gov.gr platform, cameras and drones, with the aim of creating a modern, completely reliable, and technologically secure railway system.

A visit to the headquarters of Hellenic Railways was made Deputy Minister of Transportation Giorgos Kotsiras, accompanied by Secretary General of Transportation Stelios Sakaretios.

The visit

Mr. Kotsiras held a working meeting with the CEO of Hellenic Railways, Christos Palio, members of the board of directors, and general managers, during which they discussed the organization’s priorities and ongoing initiatives regarding projects, financing, digital transformation, human resources, and the operational management of the network.

Subsequently, the Deputy Minister visited the Athens Traffic Control Center at the Acharnes Railway Center (SKA), where he was briefed on the remote management system used to monitor train traffic, how the railway.gov.gr, and the use of cameras and drones to monitor the network. He also had the opportunity to speak with newly hired employees of Hellenic Railways, emphasizing the importance of professionalism and responsibility in fulfilling the critical duties they are called upon to undertake. With Greek Police officials participating in the “Ariadne” operational plan, Mr. Kotsiras discussed their crucial role in combating crime and enhancing passengers’ sense of security.

Following the visit, Mr. Kotsiras stated, “The further modernization of the national railway network remains a constant priority for us. We are focusing on the development of railway infrastructure, the continuous improvement of the network’s maintenance and operations, and the digitization of rail transport. At the same time, we support strengthening staffing and training our workforce so that technological progress is accompanied by a high level of operational competence. Our goal is a modern and completely reliable railway system for all citizens.”
