In a briefing to Congress of the U.S. that his administration would proceed with the sale of KAAN engines to Turkey Donald Trump.

The deal will amount to 700 million euros and takes on particular significance in light of Trump’s visit to Turkey for the summit of NATO.

“The government of the U.S. is prepared to authorize the export of these products, having taken into account the political, military, and economic parameters, as well as human rights concerns and arms control,” as notably highlighted in the relevant document from the U.S. Department of State to Congress.

The U.S. Congress has the right to block the sale within 15 days, but a majority vote is required in both chambers (House of Representatives, Senate), while Trump retains the right to veto.

Turkey’s requests regarding the KAAN and the F-35s

Donald Trump had previously announced that he was planning something that “will make them very happy” referring to Turkey’s requests for the sale of engines for the KAAN, as well as for the supply of F-35. Due to the purchase of Russian S-400 missiles, Turkey was excluded from the F-35 program.

Democrats React

The Democrats are reacting to the sale of engines that will be installed in the Turkish-built KAAN fighter jets, given that Turkey retains the S-400s.

“We cannot reward the Erdoğan administration while it continues to violate U.S. law and threaten our trusted, democratic allies,” said Congressman Chris Pappas, making it clear that not a single F-35 should be sold to Turkey.
