The number of 589 has deaths from the double earthquake that struck Venezuela on Wednesday, said the country’s acting president Delcy Rodríguez, providing the latest provisional toll from the tragedy.

The number of injured stands at 2,980.

A previous estimate by authorities put the death toll at 235.

The government estimates that hundreds of people remain trapped and missing, in addition to 589 confirmed deaths and 2,980 injured. A website created to receive reports of people who remain missing had 50,000 entries as of this morning.

Rodríguez also stated that the government has decided to deploy the military to the state of La Guaira.

According to a forecast by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the death toll may exceed 10,000.

Rescue teams from at least 17 countries are deploying to Venezuela to participate in the search for survivors following the two powerful earthquakes that devastated the country, the UN announced today.
