Venezuela is facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, following two powerful seismic tremors measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale that occurred within a few minutes of each other.

Images from the affected areas illustrate the scale of the devastation, as entire city blocks have been leveled.

The president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, announced that the death toll has reached 920, while the injured have exceeded 3,360.

At the same time, he warned that the death toll is expected to rise, as hundreds of people remain trapped under the rubble.

At the same time, anxiety is mounting for the missing. According to unofficial tallies from citizen networks and local websites, reports have already exceeded 51,000.

La Guaira was devastated by the earthquake

The coastal city of La Guaira is among the areas that suffered the most damage.

Satellite images show that the large residential complex “Chaves”, known to residents as “Suma”, has almost disappeared from the map. Three-story buildings have collapsed or been toppled, while a few blocks away, seven high-rise apartment buildings crumbled within seconds.

The region’s industrial zone also suffered severe damage, where 13 warehouses were reduced to piles of concrete and rebar.

Eyewitness accounts report that the international airport sustained extensive damage and was immediately closed. The strong tremor was felt even in Brazil, where buildings were evacuated as a precaution.

Residents of the affected areas complain that the government’s response was not what they expected during those first critical hours. Many say they were forced to conduct their own searches, digging through the rubble with their bare hands to locate relatives and friends.

At the same time, the authorities are struggling to cope with the scale of the disaster, while in some areas the first incidents of looting has already been reported, a fact that is heightening residents’ sense of insecurity.

The international community has begun to mobilize. The United Kingdom has sent a military aircraft carrying 68 rescue workers and specially trained dogs, while announcing financial aid amounting to 2 million pounds.

Meanwhile, the United States, Mexico, Spain, and Germany are sending medical equipment, specialized rescue teams, and humanitarian aid, as the search for survivors continues under extremely difficult conditions.
