The start of negotiations on traffic management in the Strait of Hormuz was announced by Iran with Oman, which is located directly across from the Strait.
The announcement comes just hours after the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s official statement that it would proceed with a new closure of the Strait of Hormuz in response to the previous attack by the U.S. on military bases. It should be noted that Oman is an ally of Iran, as it is one of the mediating countries in the diplomatic dialogue with the U.S.
“Iran and Oman will begin talks to establish a framework governing the future management and provision of shipping services in the Strait of Hormuz,” Iranian government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani announced on Saturday.
“The Islamic Republic and Oman will begin talks to define the framework for the future management and provision of maritime services in the Strait of Hormuz,” Mohajerani said, adding that Tehran is pursuing this process in coordination with neighboring countries.
Of course, U.S. officials maintain that Tehran does not have the authority to impose taxes or fees on ships passing through this strategically important waterway.
