At 6% of the GDP of Venezuela account for 6% of the country’s GDP, according to the initial assessment by the UN.
According to the assessment conducted by the United Nations Development Programme, the damage caused by the double earthquake that struck Venezuela on Wednesday are estimated at approximately seven billion dollars, an amount equivalent to approximately 6% of the country’s GDP, according to an assessment by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) announced today by the agency.
This preliminary UNDP assessment, conducted in the hours following the devastating earthquakes, is based primarily on satellite imagery and demographic data.
The UNDP clarifies that its assessment “does not include damage to infrastructure, the overall economic consequences, or the long-term costs of reconstruction” and notes that “the overall impact is generally up to three times greater.”
It should be noted that the estimate by the International Organization for Migration is that the twin earthquakes in Venezuela will directly affect approximately 6.76 million people, including two (2) million in the capital, Caracas. At the same time, it is sounding the alarm about “the potentially severe humanitarian impact of the disaster.”
