The president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, announced to his supporters at a pro-government rally in Belgrade that he intends to step down from the country’s highest office.
“I will be president for only a few weeks, and then I will resign,” he stated, even though his second and final presidential term is set to end in mid-2027.
Pressure from the protests and the prospect of a return to the premiership
Vucic’s decision was announced after about a year and a half of protests that began as a student-led initiative, following the collapse of a canopy at the Novi Sad train station—a tragedy that claimed the lives of 16 people.
The main demand of the protests was the calling of early elections, while discussions regarding the Serbian president’s political future had intensified recently.
His latest statements follow recent reports about a possible resignation, as well as rumors that he might return to the position of prime minister, a position he held from 2014 to 2017.
The election schedule has not yet been set
Aleksandar Vučić has made it clear that he will actively participate in the election campaign, with the aim of supporting the Serbian Progressive Party and help ensure its victory in the upcoming elections.
However, he did not announce exactly when he would submit his resignation, nor when the procedures for the dissolution of the Parliament, which is a prerequisite for holding early parliamentary elections.
Thus, the timeline for developments remains open for now, with the political scene in Serbia entering a period of heightened uncertainty.
