Deposits showed an increase of 340 million euros deposits from households and businesses in May, bringing their total balance to 155 billion euros, compared with an increase of 869 million euros the previous month.

The annual rate of change stood at 4.1%, unchanged from the previous month.

More specifically, according to data from the Bank of Greece, deposits from businesses increased by 4.9 billion euros, compared with a decrease of 935 million euros the previous month, while the annual rate of change rose to 18.7% from 10.8% the previous month. Specifically, deposits from Non-Financial Corporations (NFCs) increased by 4.582 billion euros, compared with a decrease of 1.075 billion euros the previous month. Deposits from insurance companies and other financial institutions increased by 390 million euros, compared with an increase of 139 million euros the previous month.

Overall, private-sector deposits increased by 5.3 billion euros in May 2026, compared with a decrease of 66 million euros the previous month, while the annual rate of change rose to 7.8% from 5.8% the previous month.

General government deposits decreased by 249 million euros in May 2026, compared with an increase of 32 million euros the previous month, while the annual rate of change fell to 14.6% from 22.5% the previous month.

On the loans side , the monthly net flow of bank financing to businesses, in May 2026, was positive by 1.285 billion euros, compared with a negative net flow of 1.150 billion euros the previous month. The annual rate of change rose to 9.8% from 8.8% the previous month.

Specifically, the annual rate of change in bank financing to non-financial corporations (NFCs) rose to 9.8% from 9.5% the previous month. The monthly net flow of financing to these enterprises was positive at 427 million euros, compared with a negative net flow of 731 million euros the previous month. The annual rate of change in financing for insurance companies and other financial institutions rose to 9.2% from 2.8% the previous month. The monthly net flow of financing to these institutions was positive by 858 million euros, compared with a negative net flow of 419 million euros the previous month.

The monthly net flow of bank financing to individuals and private nonprofit institutions in May 2026, compared with a negative net flow of 13 million euros the previous month. The annual rate of change in their financing stood at 2.7%, unchanged from the previous month.

Overall, the annual rate of change in total bank financing to the private sector rose to 7.4% from 6.8% the previous month. The monthly net flow of total financing to the private sector was positive at 1.315 billion euros, compared with a negative net flow of 1.216 billion euros the previous month.

Finally, the monthly net flow of bank financing to general government, in May 2026, was positive at 329 million euros, compared with a positive net flow of 135 million euros in the previous month. The annual rate of change in general government financing stood at 0.0%, up from -0.7% the previous month.
