Tsipras has completely discredited not only SYRIZA but also his former fellow lawmakers, and this is sparking backlash.
Alexis Tsipras makes it clear that there are no reserved positions for his former fellow lawmakers who are in SYRIZA, and that the fact that they have been elected members of parliament does not mean they will be candidates in the upcoming elections if they decide to resign and vacate their seats to become ordinary members and volunteers in EL.A.S.
This stance is provoking reactions. It is telling that some of the MPs who were waiting on the pier for the ferry to Ithacaseem to be having second thoughts, since such a development would lead to their complete discredit and personal disgrace, since even if they were included on the EL.A.S. ballots, voters would look down on them because of their behavior.
Beyond these, however, there are also the SYRIZA MPs who were targeted from the start and have been shut out by Alexis Tsipras and his new allies. We’re talking about Pavlos Polakis, Rena Dourou, and Nikos Pappas. We’re talking about close—perhaps among the closest—associates of the former head of the SYRIZA headquarters during his time as prime minister.
They are literally on the brink. They believe a plot was hatched to dismantle SYRIZA and discredit them, and they seem willing to go down fighting… fighting and refusing… to tolerate the behavior of their former leader, with whom they haven’t spoken since the party’s crushing defeat in 2023.
What Nikos Pappas said yesterday on OPEN are indicative of what is happening, especially the part where he sent a message to Alexis Tsipras.
“Tsipras’s statement makes it clear that the only way for his political initiative to succeed is for him to go it alone and negotiate,” he said, adding that “I’m not of that school of thought. I don’t think reservations like that should be voiced in public discourse.”
To emphasize this, he sent a warning message to Tsipras’s camp: “The positions we hold are ones to which we were elected, not appointed. I’ll leave it at that for now; I hope we won’t have to take this any further. I take Tsipras at his word when he says he doesn’t interfere in the internal affairs of other parties. What does that mean? It’s inconceivable that someone would support their party and remain in SYRIZA simply to keep SYRIZA on the back burner.”
In other words? In other words, it seems the saga will continue with unpredictable developments…
