Murderous bait killed 21 dogs in Vavdo, Halkidiki. The Municipality of Polygyros is appealing for information collection.

A tragic incident occurred in Vavdo, Halkidiki, which resulted in the killing of 21 dogs with poisoned bait. The animals, 14 adults and 7 minors, were being cared for by a local breeder.

The incident was condemned in the same statement by the Municipality of Polygyros, which said it was an “indescribable act of barbarism, which offends every sense of humanity and culture” and a “serious criminal offence, which is strictly prosecuted by Greek law”.

“The Municipality of Polygyros will not remain indifferent to such criminal actions,” said the mayor of Polygyros, George Emmanuel, while, as it became known after the incident, the Municipality will proceed to file a lawsuit against unknown persons, will fully cooperate with the competent police authorities to identify those responsible, will collect data and testimonies from the wider area, and will proceed to inform citizens about the danger of poisoned baits, both for animals and for public health, but also to strengthen the protection and management of stray animals.

Among other things, the announcement of the Municipality of Polygyros said, “The Municipality, in cooperation with the Five-Member Committee for the Management of Stray Animals and the local animal welfare associations, had already taken repeated actions to manage the specific animal population, providing support through sterilizations and free medical care. Despite the difficulties and the limited possibilities for cooperation in some cases, the municipal services and volunteers have continued their efforts to improve conditions and promote adoptions.”

Finally, citizens with any information about the incident are asked to contact the competent authorities immediately, helping to solve the case.
