At a period of heightened geopolitical challenges in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, Athens is intensifying its diplomatic initiatives with the aim of maintaining regional balance and strengthening international cooperation. Foreign Minister Georgos Gerapetritis had a high-level meeting with Lebanese Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri, as part of a dialogue focusing on political stability, security and developments in the wider region. The discussion is part of Greece’s strategic approach for an active role in regional balances, with an emphasis on supporting institutional governments and avoiding further destabilization.
Lebanese Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri met with Lebanese Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis on Tuesday (21/04), who reiterated that Athens is in favour of preserving the territorial sovereignty and integrity of Lebanon and that is why the support of the government and the President, General Aoun, is an absolute priority for the Greek capital.

Special interest was again expressed by the minister on the Christian populations of the wider region, but also on a new possible surge of migratory waves.

Recall that Athens has also contributed to supporting the Lebanese armed forces by sending armored vehicles, while it was a signatory, along with nine other European countries, to a joint statement on March 31, condemning Hezbollah but calling on Israel not to proceed with operations on Lebanese territory, noting that only the government is responsible for dealing with the Shiite organization.
