Accusingly denied any involvement in an illegal act the Member of Parliament for Heraklion Maximos Senetakis, during his statement in the plenary session of the Parliament, in the context of the procedure for the waiver of immunity.
Mr. Senetakis said that “I have not committed any illegal or criminal act”, noting that he considers it his duty to make himself available to the competent authorities in order to fully clarify the case.
The investigation concerns a possible accusation of incitement to harm the interests of the EU, to the degree of a misdemeanour, as revealed in a file from the European Public Prosecutor’s Office that has been forwarded to the Parliament.
The MEP said he was surprised to be informed that his name was included in the dicografia, explaining that the case is based exclusively on a telephone communication he had with the then administrator of OPEKEPE.
As he argued, his intervention was limited to conveying a farmer’s request, which he said was legitimate, reasonable and procedural in nature, without any illegal payment of money being sought.
“I simply submitted the request and asked that it be considered, without applying pressure or asking for exceptional service,” he noted, adding that it does not appear from the conversation that there was any action that resulted in an illegal payment.
Addressing his colleagues, Mr. Senetakis stressed that he never committed the offence for which he is being investigated, urging them to look at the whole conversation and not fragmentary elements.
He asked for a vote to lift his immunity, noting: “At a time when trust in institutions is being tested, I feel it is my duty to be scrutinised like every Greek citizen, so that there is not the slightest doubt about my innocence.”
