The opinion that the Greek-Turkish problems and the Cyprus should not be an obstacle to the participation of Turkey in the European security architecture expressed by the former President of the Republic of Turkey, Abdullah Gul, speaking at the Delphi Economic Forum.

On the occasion of the war in Iran, Gul argued that Europe must stop underestimating itself, adding, however, that alone is not enough. “We need a broad vision that includes the whole continent, from Great Britain to Turkey,” he noted, adding: “Turkey has a position of geostrategic importance. It has military capability and strategic reach that Europe needs today.”

In addition, he argued that Greece and Turkey as neighbours should “solve problems instead of creating“, considering that dialogue and more opportunities for cooperation are needed. “I supported a good friendship between Turkey and Greece. I tried to create a positive climate and a positive agenda. We need a positive climate,” he added.

He admitted that “there are problems between us”, while asked about war threats against Greece like President Tayyip Erdogan’s for an invasion “one night”, he replied that it is a matter of populism and that “extremists exist on both sides. But we have to manage them”.

Finally, speaking about the situation in Israeli-Turkish relations, he said there is tension but not conflict.
