Iranian diplomatic chief Arabic Araghchi arrived in St. Petersburg, Russia today.
Araghchi is expected to meet with President Bladimir Putin, making a new stop on his diplomatic tour of the war in the Middle East after the cancellation of the meeting in Islamabad. “The Iranian foreign minister arrived in St. Petersburg, Russia to meet and discuss with Russian President Vladimir Putin,” Iranian state media reported.
As we approach three weeks since a ceasefire was declared after 40 days of hostilities in the Middle East, Moscow remains one of Iran’s main backers.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russian President Putin will meet with Foreign Minister Araghchi.
Iranian ambassador to the Russian Federation, Kazem Jalali, noted via X that the Iran and Russia belong to a “united front” that is opposed by “the world’s hegemonic powers” and seeks “a world free of unilateralism and Western domination”.
In the absence of a clear prospect of a meeting with US representatives, Iran’s foreign minister is continuing his contacts, particularly with the leadership of Pakistan, which has been tasked to play a mediating role and hosted the first round of negotiations with the US.
He arrived in Islamabad on Friday, where he held talks with powerful army chief Asim Mounir and Prime Minister Shabaz Sharif, then to Oman, where he met with Sultan Haitham bin Tariq.
“As the only countries with a coastline in Oromuz, we are focused on ways to guarantee safe passage for the benefit of all our dear neighbors and the world,” Abbas Araghchi said via X after his meeting with the Sultan of Oman, referring to the Strait, which remains under a dual, Iranian and US, blockade.
The minister also spoke by phone with his Turkish counterpart Hakhan Fidan before returning to Pakistan for a few hours and boarding a flight to Russia yesterday. According to Iran’s FARS news agency, he sent “text messages” through Pakistan, with recipients in Washington, regarding Tehran’s “red lines” on the Strait of Hormuz and the Islamic Republic’s nuclear energy program.
