First look at BYD’s plug-in hybrid B-SUV car, Atto 2 DM-i, with a focus on technology, economics and increased electric autonomy.

At a time when the European car market is transforming rapidly towards electrified mobility, BYD is attempting to redefine the B-SUV segment with a proposition that is neither pure electric nor conventionally hybrid, but an evolved plug-in hybrid with an electric dominance philosophy. The new BYD ATTO 2 DM-i enters the scene dynamically as an augmented autonomy model, designed to fill the gap between full electric drive and traditional use of thermal motors, offering a realistic solution for daily commuting without charging restrictions. The Manifesto attended the model’s nationwide press launch at BYD’s showroom in Alimos and had the opportunity for a first look at the 212-horsepower Boost version, driving through the parallel arc of Attica from Alimos to Artemis, in a route that highlighted the character and philosophy of the DM-i system in practice. Featuring DM-i technology, advanced Blade Battery and an emphasis on low fuel consumption, the Chinese brand’s new B-SUV is aimed at both private individuals seeking an electric experience without stress, and corporate users who prioritise total cost of ownership and operational efficiency.

The BYD ATTO 2 DM-i is strategically positioned in BYD’s lineup as a B-SUV with increased autonomy, aiming to bridge the gap between pure electric and thermal models. It utilizes DM-i technology, which prioritizes electric drive, with the thermal engine operating primarily in a supportive role. In this way, the brand is attempting to offer a smoother transition to electrification without the strict charging requirements of an EV.

The model is primarily aimed at users who want an electric experience without the stress of autonomy, but also at corporate fleets and leasing, where low operating costs and compliance with environmental regulations are key. In essence, it acts as a “transition tool” positioned at the heart of the B-SUV segment, aiming to combine economy, technology and practicality in a single package.

The design follows a more conventional SUV logic than BYD’s all-electric models. While retaining contemporary elements and clean lines, it incorporates details that suggest its hybrid character, such as a more “open” front end for the needs of the thermal engine. The result is a balanced aesthetic that doesn’t stray from the familiar SUV identity, but remains distinctly modernized.

The cabin adopts BYD’s modern digital philosophy, with a large screen, digital instrument panel and connected services, yet maintains a more practical and easy-to-use logic than pure EV models. Build quality is at a high level for the segment, with good trim, ergonomics and a focus on everyday usability. Overall, the ATTO 2 DM-i presents itself as a carefully balanced product that aims to make electromobility more affordable and familiar in practice.
