The meeting of the Greek Prime Minister with the Emir of Katar focused on regional developments and the strengthening of bilateral economic cooperation.

The meeting of Kyriakos Mitsotakis with the Emiral of Qatar took place in a particularly critical international environment, with regional developments being at the heart of talk, as well as the strengthening of bilateral economic cooperation.

The Greek Prime Minister expressed his appreciation for the presence of Emiris, underlining the importance of dialogue: “I appreciate the fact that you are here to discuss the worrying regional developments and the bilateral economic cooperation that is constantly being strengthened.” He also stressed Greece’s enduring stance, noting that “Greece has stood by all the Gulf countries” and supported Qatar “against an unprovoked attack”.

Special reference was made to efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region, with the Prime Minister noting, “We appreciate your country’s efforts for the ceasefire but also for the establishment of a sustainable peace to ensure permanent freedom of navigation in the region, which will allow us to overcome the consequences affecting all economies.”

In terms of the economy, Kyriakos Mitsotakis highlighted the country’s positive course, stating: “I appreciate Qatar’s commitment to invest in Greece. Our economy has made significant progress. We have achieved the largest debt reduction as a percentage of GDP in the history of the OECD and we are growing faster than other EU countries.” At the same time, he expressed optimism that it opens “a new chapter in the economic cooperation” between the two countries.

For his part, the Emiral of Qatar underlined the frequent communication between the two sides in recent times, saying: “During this period we have spoken many times.” He thanked Greece for its stance, stressing: “Thank you and your country for standing by friends in this conflict. We appreciate your country’s efforts.”

He also expressed hope for a quick end to the crisis: “We hope that this conflict will end very quickly through negotiations“. Referring to bilateral relations, he noted that “we are very happy with these relations,” adding that “our investments in Greece are doing great.”

The Emir praised the performance of the Greek economy, stating that “your economy is doing well under your leadership” and expressed interest in further cooperation, saying, “We look forward to other opportunities for investment in your country.”

He concluded by stressing the importance of strengthening ties at a time of international challenges: “Looking at what is happening in the world, it is important to strengthen these relations.”
