At the heart of the discussions between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin were the developments in Ukraine and the possibility of a temporary ceasefire, while issues concerning the nuclear programme of Iran and regional balances of power were raised. According to information from the Russian side, reference was also made to prospects for strengthening economic and energy relations between the two countries, which suggests an effort to maintain open channels of communication at multiple levels.
In particular, Russian President Vladimir Putin had conversations with Donald Trump on Wednesday, the Kremlin said. The telephone conversation between the two leaders lasted 1.5 hours.
In Putin’s sights on Zelensky
“Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump had a telephone conversation on Wednesday, during which the Russian leader presented ideas for resolving the conflict over Iran’s nuclear program and proposed a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine to mark the anniversary of the end of World War II next month,” a Kremlin official said.
“Putin and Trump assessed the behavior of the ‘Kiev regime’, led by Zelensky, which is prolonging the conflict,” Moscow claimed.
“The two presidents discussed the great potential for mutually beneficial projects in the economic and energy sectors, and agreed to maintain contacts both personally and at the aide level.”
