Strategic “injection” of power with Rheinmetall MAN brings a new era in military vehicle production and strengthens the Greek defence industry in Thessaloniki.

The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between ELVO and Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles marks a decisive development for the domestic defence sector, paving the way for the strengthening of the industrial production of military vehicles in Greece. The cooperation is in the context of the upgrading of the Greek defence industry, with an emphasis on transfer of know-how, the exploitation of the production base of ELVO in Thessaloniki and the development of modern military solutions tailored to the needs of the Greek Armed Forces. At the same time, it is estimated that it will enhance domestic added value, create new highly skilled jobs and upgrade the country’s role in the European defence map.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for their strategic cooperation was signed by Hellenic Vehicle Industry S.A.. and Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles GmbH, with the main objective of strengthening the domestic defence industry and meeting the operational needs of the Greek Armed Forces.

Development in the production sectors

According to a statement, the agreement sets the framework for the development of synergies in the production and technology sectors, including the integration of modern infrastructure and advanced superstructures, such as air defence systems. At the same time, it envisages the assembly of military trucks, which will be tailored to the needs of the Greek Army, Navy and Air Force.

The initiative, according to the same sources, is part of the broader framework of strengthening the country’s defence autonomy through the exploitation of domestic production capabilities combined with international expertise. At the heart of the cooperation is the upgrading and expansion of ELVO’s production line, a development that is estimated to contribute to the creation of new highly skilled jobs and the strengthening of industrial activity in Northern Greece.

Special emphasis is placed on the role of ELVO’s facilities in Thessaloniki, which, it is noted, constitute a key pillar of the Greek defence industrial base. The plant has significant capabilities for the manufacture, assembly and maintenance of vehicles, and is considered a strategic hub for the implementation of future defence programmes.

Specialised military trucks

Elvo, a member of the SK Group, seeks, through the cooperation, to strengthen its position in both the domestic and international markets, utilising its know-how and infrastructure. For its part, RMMV contributes its extensive portfolio of military and tactical vehicles, which includes solutions ranging from militarized commercial platforms to specialized high-mobility military trucks.

The company’s vehicles are available in multiple configurations, from 4×4 to 10×10, and are designed for operations in demanding off-road environments, offering a high level of reliability and versatility. As noted, their modular design allows them to be adapted to different operational profiles and needs.

Through the partnership, the two sides seek to create a strong and sustainable industrial base capable of supporting Greece’s defence needs, while enhancing economic growth and innovation in the defence industry.

In a statement, ELVO general manager Antonis Vitetzakis described the agreement as an “important milestone” for the company and the industry as a whole, noting that the partnership with Rheinmetall strengthens national industrial capabilities and creates new growth prospects.

As he said, the combination of ELVO’s production base with Rheinmetall’s know-how and technological capabilities creates the conditions for providing modern and reliable solutions to the Greek Armed Forces, while upgrading the role of Thessaloniki as a center of defense production and innovation.
