Labour Minister Niki Kerameos has described as dangerous, undocumented and worrying the proposal by PASOK and Nikos Androulakis to open the debate on the 4-day work in the country.
Anyone who has followed my course will see that I am very open to proposals from the opposition. But here we have a proposal with three characteristics: dangerous, undocumented and worrying,” she said while speaking to Skai.
“k. Androulakis tells us about four days of full pay without telling us who will pay for the fifth day. It’s a proposal that will mathematically lead to lucky thousands of small businesses and unemployment thousands of workers.”
“Let’s say you work in a mana shop. He is told by Mr. Androulakis “you will now work Monday-Thursday, but you will be paid as if you were working a full week Monday-Friday”. That means the grocery store will have to hire someone else for the extra day. So in essence it is a huge burden on labor costs, some businesses won’t be able to afford that. The ones that will struggle and will bear it, where will this cost be shifted to?”Kerameos underlined.
To add:
“It has been legislated in France, where it has been implemented. France has some of the highest unemployment as we speak. Do you know that 2 months ago it had higher unemployment than Greece? So let’s be realistic. He came out as leader of the opposition, made a proposal that changes so many lives in the labour market of the country and he didn’t have half the number. How will it affect insurance contributions and funds?”
