A stalemate remains in the negotiations US-Iran, with the situation in the Sea of Hormuz unchanged, with the double blockade continuing.
Today marks the end of the 60-day deadline for US President Donald Trump to seek the approval of Congress to declare war on Iran or, failing that, to halt military operations, although his administration has hinted that he will ignore that obligation.
Meanwhile, the US president protested on Thursday against efforts by Congress aimed at limiting his war powers. The US President also said that no one knows the progress of talks with Iran except him and a few others, suggesting that negotiations are moving forward despite the apparent stagnation seen publicly. He was expected to be briefed by Pentagon officials on the latest military options.
Meanwhile, the conflict between the US and its European allies has reached new heights, with Trump threatening to withdraw US troops from Germany, Italy and Spain amid disagreements over the war in Iran. “The trust in the White House is no longer the same,” a German congressman told CNN.
For his part, Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei stressed his different stance on the region, calling Iran’s recent gains irrevocable facts.
Air defense systems took action last Thursday night against small aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles in the skies of the Iranian capital Tehran, Iranian media reported.
Meanwhile, Iran said on Thursday that it would respond with “long and painful attacks” against US positions if Washington resumes its attacks and claims in the Strait of Hormuz, complicating US plans to build a coalition aimed at reopening the sea route.
Rising oil prices
Oil prices marked a rise today but remained below the four-year highs recorded yesterday as negotiations to end the war in Iran remained deadlocked and the Strait of Hormuz remained closed to most maritime traffic.
Brent futures for July, the global benchmark, rose 1.0 percent to $111.48 a barrel, having risen sharply yesterday before retreating at the close.
West Texas Intermediate futures were 0.4% higher at $105.50 per barrel.
