Ensuring free navigation in the Seaway of Hormuz has been the focus of the conversations between Giorgos Gerapetritis and his German counterpart.

Athens is claiming a leading role in international efforts to protect maritime trade routes, as foreign minister during his meeting with Johan Vandevol.

Gerapetritis underlined the strategic importance of the region for international stability, announcing our country’s intention to contribute substantially to the initiatives for the safe passage of ships.

In his official remarks,the Greek minister noted:

“We support the international initiatives for the unimpeded and safe passage of the Strait of Hormuz and we add to take an active role in cooperation with the maritime community

Mr. Gerapetritis placed particular emphasis on the universal dimension of respect for navigation rules, stressing that the issue goes beyond commercial transactions and is directly linked to global peace.

At the same time, he recalled Greece’s actions as a member of the UN Security Council, while referring to the risks of regional instability, he said:

It is important to prevent the unfolding crisis from reaching uncontrollable proportions for the global economy, the international food chain and the daily lives of citizens.”
