The establishment of a Strategic Partnership Cooperation between Greece and Germany announced in a joint statement by the foreign ministries of the two countries.
As they stressed in their joint statement, the two countries “can build on a long-standing friendship rooted in deep historical, cultural and social ties, as well as in our shared values of freedom and democracy, human rights and respect for the rule of law, which constitute a solid foundation even in difficult times.”
“As members of the United Nations, we fully support the rules-based international order, with particular emphasis on respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity and compliance with international law,” he stresses.
At the same time, he notes that “we strongly support ongoing efforts to strengthen multilateral solutions by making the United Nations more effective and efficient.”
The two countries, “in light of the fundamental geopolitical changes caused by Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, as well as the instability in the Near and Greater Middle East, are committed to taking joint responsibility and intensifying their efforts to contribute to peace and security in Europe and beyond“.
“Ten years after the signing of the first Greek-German Action Plan in 2016, the strength of our partnership is reflected in the well-established close political dialogue, as well as in significant investment and bilateral trade. Our excellent and growing cooperation in the fields of culture and science, and in particular the ties between the German and Greek people, form the stable and strong basis of our bilateral relations,” the joint statement adds.
Greece and Germany, “as partners in the EU and allies in NATO, our common interest is to maintain a strong, secure and competitive Europe in today’s challenging environment. In this spirit, we are committed to further intensify our close cooperation, as well as to expand and consolidate our bilateral ties for the benefit of our societies, thus taking our cooperation to a new level.”
On this basis and “recognizing the need to further strengthen coordination between our two countries in a rapidly changing global environment, we agree to work together towards an agenda for a Strategic Partnership Partnership for Cooperation between Greece and Germany, addressing the following pillars:
- Foreign Policy, Security, Migration & European Affairs, with the aim of creating an ambitious framework for bilateral and European coordination on key geopolitical issues, regional stability, multilateral governance, migration flows and the future of the European Union.
- Defense, Civil Protection and Hybrid Threats, Law Enforcement, with the aim of strengthening our capabilities to counter conventional and hybrid threats and expanding our efforts in the areas of defense procurement, logistics and crisis management.
- Economic Cooperation, Investment, Digital Transformation and Infrastructure, with the aim of enhancing the resilience of bilateral and European trade and investment, strengthening industrial ecosystems and harnessing new technologies for governance, business and a socially just transformation.
- Science, Education, Skills and Culture, Civil Society and Youth, with the aim of promoting cooperation in research, education and cultural exchanges, and further enhancing mutual understanding and reconciliation between societies.
According to the joint statement, “Ministries of Foreign Affairs will be responsible for monitoring and effectively implementing this renewed partnership through regular consultations, in cooperation with the relevant ministries.”
