Russia has been accused of “absolute cynicism” by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Specifically, Zelensky said today that Russia had shown “absolute cynicism” by calling for ceasefire to mark the May 9 commemoration of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany, and then launching missile and drone attacks against his country.
Zelensky said five people were killed and dozens more wounded during overnight Russian attacks that mostly targeted energy infrastructure in Ukraine.
“It is absolute cynicism to call for a ceasefire to hold propaganda celebrations by launching such missile and drone strikes every day,” he said via a post on X.
“Russia could cease fire at any time and that would stop the war and our response. Peace is necessary and real steps are needed to achieve it.Ukraine will act in the same way,” he added.
Russia made it known yesterday Monday thatit would unilaterally implement a ceasefire in Ukraine on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 May as part of commemorations of victory in World War II, threatening that if violated by Ukrainian armed forces, it would launch a “massive missile attack”against Kiev.
The Ukrainian side responded by declaring its own unilateral ceasefire from midnight today, Tuesday 5 May, to midnight on Wednesday 6 May, with President Volodymyr Zelensky commenting that “it is not serious” to expect a ceasefire to be observed to celebrate the Russian military.
