EU Trade Commissioner EU Maros Sefchowitz has announced that talks with US yesterday, Wednesday, evening on customs tariffs lasted almost six hours.
Although progress was made, he said, no agreement.
“Last night we spent almost six hours in an important trilateral dialogue on the tariffs arrangement implementing the EU-US Joint Statement between the European Union and the United States. This significant investment of time and effort shows that we are making substantial progress and we have already achieved a lot, although, of course, nothing is considered agreed until everything is agreed,” said Maros Sefčović.
In a message on the LinkedIn platform, he set out his threefold objective, focusing on respecting the agreement and commitments and safeguarding European interests.
“My objective remains threefold. First, to prove that the EU keeps its commitments and puts into practice what it says. Second, to ensure an outcome that fully respects the EU-US Joint Statement. <Thirdly, to safeguard the interests of European stakeholders, including by equipping the Commission with the necessary tools to ensure that the EU-US Joint Statement is faithfully implemented by both sides."
Finally, the Commissioner stressed that conversations were continuing “with the aim of achieving a positive outcome quickly” and called on “the US administration to honour its commitments”.
