The temporary ceasefire begins Saturday in Ukraine and includes the mass release of prisoners from both sides.

Diplomatic success in ending hostilities in eastern Europe is claimed by the president of United States, Donald Trump, announcing the implementation of a three-day ceasefire.

The agreement, which will take effect tomorrow, Saturday, and run through Monday, May 11, comes as a follow-up to Vladimir Putin for a ceasefire to mark Victory Day.

With his intervention today, the US leader confirmed the extension of the cessation of fighting for two additional days, marking a critical de-escalation on the war front.

Through the Truth Social platform, Trump revealed that the deal also includes a broad humanitarian move, with the exchange of 1,000 prisoners from each side involved.

He stressed his personal role in the consultations, noting, “The request was submitted directly by me and I highly appreciate the agreement of President Vladimir Putin and President, Volodymyr Zelensky. I hope that this is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly and cruel war.”

This development raises hopes for a permanent resolution of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, which has been the longest military confrontation in Europe since 1945.

The US president appeared optimistic about the progress of diplomatic contacts, adding that “the talks to end this great conflict, the greatest since World War II, are continuing and we are getting closer every day.”

Summary of Trump’s post:

“I am pleased to announce that a three-day ceasefire (May 9, 10 and 11) will be in effect in the war between Russia and Ukraine. The celebration in Russia is for Victory Day, but so is the celebration in Ukraine, as it too played an important role in World War II. This ceasefire will include the suspension of all war activity, as well as the exchange of 1,000 prisoners from each country.

This request was made directly by me and I greatly appreciate the agreement of President Vladimir Putin and President Volodymyr Zelensky. I hope that this is the beginning of the end of a very long, murderous and cruel war. Talks to end this great conflict, the longest since World War II, are continuing and we are getting closer every day. Thank you for your attention to this issue!”
