His own response was given by New Democracy MEP Giorgos Avtias, following the reactions and political controversy surrounding his initiative to support parents with children with children.
He made it clear that his intervention to the European commissioners was aimed at seeking financial help for families facing serious difficulties, especially for the children’s next day when their parents pass away.
Giorgos Avtias said, “I am sad to see that such a sensitive and human issue is becoming the subject of political debate. What I asked the Finance Commissioners, conveying the requests of parents with disabled children, was to provide European support for these children especially when their parents pass away. My initiative was solely about finding funds.
This MEP then stressed that his positions on children and families with disabilities are clear and firm, noting that they are not open to misinterpretation.
“My positions on supporting disabled children and families are well known, clear and not subject to misinterpretation and distortion. My initiatives are always based on respect for the rights of these children and the provision of all material and moral support to prevent any form of social exclusion. Only with humanity and solidarity can we stand by the side of disabled children and their families. Political speculation is enough,” he added.
