The leading role of our country in initiatives for peace in the wider Middle East was highlighted by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Giorgos Gerapetritis, during his arrival at the European Union, in Brussels.

“Greece, with strong alliances, has a leading role”, he said.

He stressed that he would inform the Council about the existence of a maritime drone in the Ionian Sea. “This is a particularly serious development. At the moment the investigation into the incident by the General Staff is underway. When the investigation is completed and the necessary technical characteristics are established, there will be a reaction on the part of the Greek government with the necessary steps,” he said.

He made it clear that our country “will not allow warlike actions to develop in the wider Mediterranean region and especially towards Greece.”

At the Foreign Affairs Council today, George Gerapetritis noted:

“At the Foreign Affairs Council today we will have the opportunity to discuss major issues that are in the news, Gaza, Ukraine, the Western Balkans.

Greece is at the forefront of most initiatives in terms of peace in the wider Middle East. Greece, with strong alliances, has a leading role. We stress at every opportunity the need to have absolute assurance of freedom of navigation and we are ready to take all necessary actions in cooperation with our partners and allies.

When it comes to Western Balkans, Greece has taken a strong initiative with the Delphi Declaration, which was signed a few weeks ago and strengthens the effort to make enlargement a reality with the Greek Presidency of the EU Council in the second half of 2027.

I would also like to point out that I will inform the Council about a particularly serious incident that has occurred in recent days, and I refer to the existence of a maritime drone in the Ionian Sea. This is a particularly serious development. At the moment, the investigation into the incident by the General Staff is ongoing. When the investigation is completed and the necessary technical characteristics are established, there will be a reaction on the part of the Greek government with the necessary steps.

I would like to stress, however, that Greece will not allow the development of military actions in the wider Mediterranean region and especially on the Greek side. This creates a huge risk in terms of freedom of navigation and the safety of citizens and the environment. Greece will take all necessary steps to ensure absolutely that the Mediterranean does not become a theatre of war operations. Thank you.”
