The American president denies a deal with Vladimir Putin on Donbass, while assessing that the war in Ukraine is nearing its end.

At a period of intense diplomatic activity around the war in Ukraine, Donald Trump is back in the spotlight with statements of international interest, attempting to clarify his stance on rumors of deals with Moscow. The US president has categorically denied that he has reached any agreement with Vladimir Putin on the fate of Donbass, at a time when scenarios about a possible peace settlement between Russia and Ukraine are growing. At the same time, he stressed that, in his assessment, the conflict is closer to its end, leaving open the possibility of a future agreement that could change the balance in the region, with an eye on developments and the role that the leadership of Kiev and Volodymyr Zelensky.

U.S. President Donald Trump denied on Tuesday that he agreed with Russian President Vladimir Putin that a peace deal between Moscow and Kiev would see all of Donbass ceded to Russia.

The end of the war in Ukraine is very close

In particular, the US president said the war in Ukraine is very close to ending and that he believes there will be an agreement between Russia and Ukraine.

“I really believe the end of the war in Ukraine is very close,” Trump told reporters as he departed the White House for a trip to China.

Trump’s remarks were in line with similar comments by Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday during the May 9 Victory Day parade.

The Russian president also referred to a possible meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, saying flatly that the meeting would only take place if an agreement is reached.
