A joint announcement was issued by Dora Bakoyannis and Alexia Bakoyannis on the occasion of their appeal to Justice against the journalist Stefanos Chios.

The joint statement of Dora and Alexia Bakoyannis

Today, Stefanos Chios sentenced by the Primary Criminal Court to 25 months of suspended imprisonment and a fine of 1,500 euros, for repeated and serial publicity in the press and for insulting the memory of the dead.

This decision is not only a personal vindication for us. More importantly, the Court has found that Stefan Chiou’s connection to the Macelios is proven and documented. It can no longer hide behind pretences, evasions and misleading denials.

Let the decision be an occasion to agree on the obvious:

Journalism is a profession. It is not a weapon of blackmail, slander and cannibalism. It will not be abused by Chios and those who for years believed they could smear without consequence. There are limits. There is dignity. There is justice.
Citizens have rights. They have rights even the dead, whose memory cannot be subject to vile exploitation.

Today’s ruling finally paves the way for more transparency, more accountability and less darkness in public life. And that is something that is everyone’s business.
