The political dominance of the Central Right and the shaping of the agenda for the national elections of 2027 are the stakes of the 16th Ordinary Summit of the New Democracy.
In the current context where the left and social democracy in Greece are facing a crisis of identity and coalescence, New Democracy is the only reliable force for stability and governance. The Congress, in the final run-up to the elections, is called upon to respond to the long-standing pathologies of the political system, which, combined with the pathologies of the deep state, impede the reforms that Greece needs in order to evolve into a modern and functional state at the service of its citizens.
That is why the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, is prioritizing the “Modern State for All”, focusing on reforms that address everyday life alongside economic growth, using resources such as the Recovery Fund but also shaping the framework of the social agenda from the surpluses created by the fight against tax evasion.
Those who attended the pre-presidential process became aware of the effort made by the New Democracy party to emerge as the great popular party that expresses broader ideological and social forces without abandoning the basic characteristics that Constantine Karamanlis gave to the concept of social liberalism.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis, following the strategy of expansion outlined by its founder, always with a view to the constant evolution of the party in the spirit of the times, has highlighted New Democracy as the main representative of the political centre, extending its influence in middle class at a time when PASOK and the parties of the left – including Alexis Tsipras – are looking for a way out into the past.
At the same time that the left and centre-left opposition are looking for a narrative to justify the distance between them and reality, New Democracy is using the Congress to harmonise the party’s historical identity with the modern demands of governance.
In this context, and after celebrating more than half a century since the founding of New Democracy, the 16th Congress is called upon to use the historical heritage as a springboard for the vision “Greece 2030”, with the Prime Minister putting forward the social agenda so that the reforms for the “Modern State for All”will be the natural evolution of the party’s tradition.
And on this basis, the Congress gives the signal for the official start of the preparation for the 2027 national elections, setting the dilemma of stability versus the destabilization concordant with the practices of the opposition parties.
Since the three-day period beginning today with the speech of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis marks the restart for the path that will end with the elections and the third consecutive time that voters will renew their confidence in stability and growth, placing their hopes in the party that put the country on the path of normality.
With the slogan “Modern state for all”, the 16th Ordinary Congress wants to send a message that the character of New Democracy has not been altered in the years of eight years of governance and remains deeply popular, having as its strategic goal the building of broad social alliances beyond the narrow party boundaries.
This is also the aim of the 2026 social agenda, which includes specific interventions, such as wage and pension increases, aiming at “social balance” before the 2027 elections. This approach will allow New Democracy to claim ideological hegemony in the centre, at the same time that the traditional exponents of the social agenda (the left and social democracy) are in constant crisis, with Nikos Androulakis’ PASOK fighting for second place with Alexis Tsipras’ party.
