The convicted leader of the terrorist organization “17 November” is released after 24 years of incarceration in Korydallos prison.
The release of Alexandros Yiotopoulos was decided by the Council of Appeals, accepting the relevant request filed by the convicted for the “17 November” case. Yiotopoulos, who was serving a multi-year life sentence, is expected to pass through the prison gates in the next few hours.
The court decision comes 24 years after his arrest in the summer of 2002 in Lipsi, which marked the countdown to the dismantling of the organization.
In 2003, the Court of First Instance had given him the highest sentence, finding him guilty as the intellectual perpetrator and director of the terrorist group’s actions, a sentence that was upheld in the second instance.
For Alexander Yiotopoulos‘s release from prison, the judicial council imposed restrictive conditions to ensure his presence before the authorities. Specifically, the released man was imposed:
- The ban on leaving the country.
- The obligation to appear once a month at the police station of his place of residence.
- The declaration and maintenance of permanent residence.
