The election of Kosta Kyranakis as secretary of the Political Committee of the New Democracy is a game changer.

It introduces a model of modern, technocratic and communicatively aggressive political action with executives who are distinguished for their quick reflexes on TV panels and social media.

Kostas Kyranakis, flanked by general director Giannis Smyrlis and press spokeswoman Alexandra Sdoukou make up a team with eminently political characteristics and absolutely connected to the party’s base.

Both Giannis Smyrlis and Kostas Kyranakis –from the bowels of the centre-right party– have strong roots in the party apparatus, combining freshness with organisational constitution, while the presence of Alexandra Sdoukou emphasises the multifaceted character of New Democracy.

The choice of Kostas Kyranakis is a vote of confidence in the new generation of the party, which is called upon to bear the burden of preparation and organisational readiness for the 2027 elections, aiming to mobilise the cadres and the base as well as to re-engage with citizens who remain emotionally close to New Democracy but had distanced themselves from it.

This is a targeted selection of a “frontline” executive who has not shied away from political conflict while performing the duties assigned to him by the prime minister.
