Joint letter Dimitris Tsiodras and 44 other MEPs to Roberta Metsola requesting a permanent parliamentary committee on Artificial Intelligence.

New Democracy MEP Dimitris Tsiodras, along with 44 other MEPs, calls for the creation of a permanent Parliamentary Committee on AI in a letter to President Roberta Metsola and the chairs of the political groups of the European Parliament.

In the letter, MEPs from 17 Member States and 4 political groups of the European Parliament underline that the establishment of such a Commission would allow for the systematic monitoring of technological developments, the formulation of a coherent and long-term European strategy, the strengthening of parliamentary oversight and better coordination between existing Committees.

Referring to the increasing competition between United States and China for technological leadership in AI, the undersigned MEPs note that while Europe remains strong in research, it still lags behind in the commercial development of this technology.

They note that it is emerging as a central issue for the competitiveness, resilience of democracies, social cohesion and security of the European Union and stress the need for a coordinated and timely EU response, including decisive investment, good governance and better coordination between Member States.

Dimitris Tsiodras and the other MEPs conclude by stressing that the establishment of such a Commission represents an urgent institutional change that can contribute to the Union’s efforts to reduce its dependence on third countries for critical digital technologies and ensure that the European Parliament plays a central role in shaping Europe’s digital future.
