We want a unifying ballot in the , said the president of SYRIZA-PS, Socrates Famellos speaking at the 7th Forum of the Economic Courier.
When asked whether there would be a joint ballot for SYRIZA with the Greek Left Alliance of Alexis Tsipras, Mr. Famellos reiterated that from the beginning of his presidency at Koumoundourou he had spoken of a unifying ticket of the Left.
He then explained: “SYRIZA made a clear decision at the Central Committee meeting. It evaluated the initiative of Alexis Tsipras and decided that we view it positively, support it, and treat it as a comrade. And that it would be a strategic mistake to oppose him.”
SYRIZA wants to contribute to the reconstruction of the progressive camp in order to provide a response to the Mitsotakis regime, he added.
As for what will happen in the elections, he replied: “We want and believe that there must be a single ticket in the elections. The relevant discussion will evolve until the elections. We are responding to Greek society which is telling us, ‘do something, figure it out.’”
Responding to accusations from party officials, he said: “I made it clear and rejected any thought of dissolving SYRIZA; we are fighting for the continuation of the Left’s ideas.” As for whether he has held discussions with Alexis Tsipras, he replied: “The discussion with Alexis Tsipras takes place through public statements, as was the decision of the Central Committee. My personal and political relationship with Alexis Tsipras is very good, but that is not how dialogue takes place.”
He also responded to Polakis’s request to reach an agreement with Alexis Tsipras within ten days, saying: “The Central Committee rejected the proposal for a Plan B, as well as the discussion about moving toward programmatic convergence. Any alternative plan undermines confidence in the original one. I am committed to the plan we decided on, and I understand what the citizens want. A discussion that overturns the Central Committee’s decision does not help the citizens. The distortion of the Central Committee’s decision—that we stand together—does not respond to the citizens’ wishes. It is best for our comrades to respect the decision and work toward its implementation.”
